The End of a Young Hero: Heath Ledger Found Dead In NYC At Age 28

Heath Ledger, the talented 28-year-old actor who gravitated toward dark, brooding roles that defied his leading-man looks, was found dead Tuesday in a Manhattan apartment, facedown at the foot of his bed with prescription sleeping pills nearby, police said.

There was no obvious indication that the Australian-born Ledger had committed suicide, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said.

Montreal gay pride parade returns to daytime

MONTREAL -- Montreal's first daytime gay-pride parade since 2004 pulled in a buoyant downtown crowd Sunday which organizers said exceeded 50,000 -- far above their earlier predictions of 30,000.

Many spectators showed up in family groups, basking under brilliant early-afternoon sunshine, smiling and often swaying to the punchy music.

They were packed as much as 15 deep in some spots along the 16-block downtown route, arrayed on the banks of a spectacular river of 1,500 marchers combining colour and movement.

For Juliette Galarada, almost 9 years old, "the costumes" -- not the crowd size -- proved the highlight.

The youngster delivered that verdict as the last of 70 groups finished their relaxed, one-hour saunter.

The first large contingent -- 22 bikers from the Association des motorcyclistes gais du Quebec -- kick-started the event at 1:10 p.m. The final float crossed the finish line nearly two hours later.

Spectators had an arresting range of choice. These included fabulous plumed headpieces and four parade leaders dressed to embody fire, earth, air and water.

Followed a half-dozen transvestites clad in tight neon-green gowns, or for that matter, their companions on an elaborate float equipped with a twirly water fountain -- a group of lithe young men wearing only the skimpiest of pink bathing-suit-style briefs.

"We don't have anything like this in Cuba," marvelled Olga Falcon, part of Juliette's six-person family group.

New Domain Names For Everyone

New Domain Names For EveryoneBy Rudolf Freidlander

During the early days of the domain names, there were only three of the biggest domain names that exist on the web. These three commonly noted domain names include the .com, .net, and .org. However, today as many of the domain name companies continue to rise and as the number of the domain name consumers increase, many new domain names were then added and other new domain names are still formulated. Maybe a few years from now, we can definitely see more new domain names on the web for the reason that those proposed new domain names today are said to take function for the future.

Cracker Barrel board passes pro-gay policy
The board of directors of Cracker Barrel restaurants announced Wednesday that it is adding sexual orientation to the list of characteristics covered by the company's nondiscrimination policy. The announcement ends a more-than-decade-long campaign on the part of gay rights advocates who have been pressuring the restaurant chain because of its policy of firing employees who fail to "demonstrate normal heterosexual values."

      Gay Sheep May Help Explain
      Biology of Homosexuals
Mon Nov 4, 1:43 PM ET
By Maggie Fox, Health and Science
      Correspondent
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Gay sheep that mate
only with other rams have different brain structures from "straight"
sheep, a finding that may shed light on human sexuality, U.S. researchers
      said on Monday.
The differences are similar to those seen in
some homosexual humans, but probably only go a small way to explaining the
causes of different sexual preferences, the team at Oregon Health &
      Science University said.

"We are not trying to explain human sexuality
by this study," Charles Roselli, a professor of physiology and
pharmacology who led the study, said in a telephone interview. "Whether
this is a big component of what contributes in humans, that's still
      debatable."

Working with a team at the U.S. Department of
Agriculture's Sheep Experiment Station in Dubois, Idaho, Roselli's team
studied 27 sheep -- 10 ewes, nine rams that mated only with other rams and
eight rams that mated only with females.

Tipping the Scales of Justice

size>Tipping the Scales of Justice

From Waco to Wichita Falls, the Texas Human Rights Foundation
Celebrates 25 Years of Fighting for Gay Equality

<img height 339

Think of an organization that runs like your computer's
anti-virus program...always on, protecting you, watching out for you. You hope you
never have to use it but when you do, it's reliable and gets the job done.
That's the Texas Human Rights Foundation (THRF) in relation to your gay
life.

Now in its 26th year, THRF, the oldest statewide gay and
lesbian organization in Texas, marked the quarter-century milestone the same way
it does its business every day: behind the scenes. No spotlights. No banging
drums.

Legal issues and privacy rights have always kept THRF under
the radar screen of most gay Texans, but make no mistake, this group is very
real and tenacious. Quarterly Board of Trustees meetings bring board members
together with the Legal Coordinator to strategize. The board, unapologetic about
sexual orientation or HIV, looks for ways to serve the GLBT community and at the
same time, protect the identity of callers whose lives, jobs, children, or
housing might be endangered in their own home towns.

This legal organization, initially called the Houston Human
Rights Defense Foundation, was incorporated in the Summer of 1977 to challenge
the Texas Sodomy Statute (Section 21.06 of the Texas Penal Code). Co-Founder
Robert "Mort" Schwab and the board soon changed the name to Texas Human Rights
Foundation since they wanted to challenge State law and their defendant, Don
Baker, was from Dallas.

Schwab's contribution to the gay rights movement in Texas
and to THRF is marked by the Annual Schwab Awards, normally rotated between
Houston, Dallas, and Austin. The awards ceremonies honor outstanding individuals
and organizations serving and helping the GLBT community. Past recipients of
awards have included Don Baker himself, John Thomas, Jackson Hicks, Steve Burrus
and DIFFA, PFLAG, Annise Parker, Lori Palmer, Grant Martin, Phyllis Randolph
Frye, Christie Lee Littleton, and many others.
